Shacked Up Scores In Gold Final
Shacked Up made short work of nine rivals in capturing Monday night's $120,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series final for two-year-old filly pacers at Mohawk Racetrack in 1:52.3.
With John Campbell in town to drive for the first time, the filly got away third in the early going and watched as Arts Star put up a solid first fraction of :27.2 with longshot Icey Breeze leaving alertly to grab the pocket position.
As soon as the field straightened up towards the half, Campbell sent the daughter of Western Terror - Sapphire on the attack and she took over just before the half which was reached in :56.3. She then faced a challenge from Shellace who pressed the leader through a third station of 1:25.
Campbell asked Shacked Up for more pace as the field turned for home and she responded willingly with a strong :27.3 final frame. Icey Breeze closed gamely along the inside and just edged out a determined Arts Star for the place spot.
Northern Duchess was fourth and St Lads Popcorn, who was looking for her fourth Gold final win of the season, ended up fifth after falling victim to a slow start from Post 9.
Shacked Up now shows four wins from just six trips postward this season. The Richard 'Nifty' Norman trainee increased her earnings to just over $137,000 for Bulletproof Enterprises of Boca Raton, Florida.
Fans are reminded that live harness racing returns to Woodbine this Thursday night for the start of the Fall/Winter Meet with a first race post time of 7:30 p.m.
