Fitzsimmons Named New Truro GM
Truro Raceway is pleased to name Steve Fitzsimmons as its new General Manager.
Fitzsimmons joins Truro after a very successful three-season stint as General Manager of Ontario’s Hanover Raceway, where under his leadership the track more than doubled their wagering handle, as well as overhauled their race-day broadcast, making it among the best in the country.
He also created the OLG Ontario Women’s Driving Championship in 2021, which led to five Ontario tracks participating in 2022 and provided additional driving opportunities to Ontario’s best female drivers, while raising significant funds for Harness the Hope, a well-known breast cancer charity based in Ontario.
Fitzsimmons is also a well known and respected hockey broadcaster and has been the TV play-by-play voice of the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm for the last 21 seasons. He also recently finished his second term as an elected Councillor with the Town of Hanover.
The 49-year-old married father of two has been a Standardbred owner for more than 30 years and grew up going to the racetrack with his father, who was a trainer and raced a few horses part-time.
“I’m very appreciative to Anthony Stymest and the Truro Raceway board for this opportunity, to help Truro reach its vast potential in the years ahead. I’m looking forward to being part of the proud history of this historic track and can’t wait to get started,” said Fitzsimmons.
“We are very pleased to have Steve join our team. His leadership experience and track record of success will help Truro to reach the goals that we have as an organization and help harness racing grow in the province of Nova Scotia. We look forward to working with Steve,” commented Truro Raceway Board Chair Anthony Stymest.
“We also want to thank Kelly MacEachen for her efforts in leading us through a pandemic and difficult times. We are very grateful to her and appreciate everything she has done on behalf of Truro Raceway.” said Stymest.
Fitzsimmons will relocate to Nova Scotia and begin his new position with Truro Raceway in late February. In the meantime, he can be reached at 519-372-6511 or email [email protected].
