Hot Commodities At Rideau

If the movie franchise 'Rocky' was ever set to racing, it might star a three-year-old filly named Barocky

.

The daughter of Mach Three overcame a tricky trip and challenging race flow to register her second straight victory in as many career starts on Thursday, February 9 at Rideau Carleton Raceway.

Leaving slowly out of the four-hole for trainer/driver Ted McDonald, Barocky quickly found her self third last by the eighth pole. That quickly changed, however, as McDonald fired her to the engine just in front of the stands.

However, an active race flow saw the lead change just past the half, as Far Superior (driven by Denis St. Pierre) assumed command and was then locked in battle with an oncoming Weekend Love (Rod Zeron).

St Pierre, in an attempt to let his rival pass, checked up slightly, and thus backed up Barocky, who by that time was sitting third. That caused a moment of head shyness on the part of the Julie Fergusson-owned filly, as she lost five lengths in the process.

Undeterred, Barocky was steadied by McDonald, launched a ground-saving trip and swung past her tiring rivals down the lane. Barocky's late rush was made even more challenging, as an exhausted Far Superior was drifting somewhat erratically.

Parlez Vous Le 'Jackpot?'

It was a good night for hunch players on Thursday at Rideau.

Parlez Best recorded his first victory of the year off poor recent form to produce a win ticket worth $154.80.

Winless in his last nine starts, Parlez Best parlayed an off-the-speed effort into a winning score for owner/trainer/driver Rod Zeron in 1:57.3.

The 'cha-ching' meter didn't stop there, especially for pilot Denis St Pierre.

'DSP' not only captured another five-star performance with five wins on the card, but he capped it off by bringing home a 63-1 bomb in Go Go Earl in Race 14. St Pierre guided the trotter --- who at age nine could only boast of two previous wins --- to a coast-to-coast spanking of the rest of the field. The result: a win ticket worth $128.30.

Not only did St. Pierre win five races, Claude Boivin scored a rare five-bagger of his own as the owner of five winning horses - three of which he trains. Boivin pupils Waterside Lucky (Race 7), Pick Up Point (Race 8) and Lakers Vett (race 15) all scored with St. Pierre aboard, and Boivin also holds the papers on Bee Sparky (Race 9) and Luke But Dontouch (Race 11).
