Carro B Bunsen Bests Century Mile Peers
Ripping off cover, 15-1 shot Carro B Bunsen barreled down the Century Mile stretch to land an upset win in the $10,500 Preferred 2 Pace on Saturday night (Dec. 31).
Outlaw Gunsablazin slid to the lead past a :27.1 first quarter, but yielded control to odds-on favourite Samba Beat into the backstretch. Samba Beat then kept rolling towards a :55.3 half and tried to snag a breather to three-quarters in 1:25. Though the fast first half proved taxing on Samba Beat and he shortened stride for home. Munchie Chris motored toward the lead first over while Carro B Bunsen angled off his cover and came charging late. Carro B Bunsen grabbed the lead to take a neck victory in 1:54.2 over Munchie Chris, with Outlaw Gunsablazin taking third and Whiplash Smile finishing fourth.
Rod Starkewski trains and co-owns Carro B Bunsen with breeder Keith Boras. The four-year-old Blue Burner stallion won his 10th race from 70 starts and has now earned $95,661. Nate Sobey drove the $33 winner.
Trainer Dave Kelly collected a hat trick on the Saturday card. He won with Captain Fireball ($8 to win), HF Number Five ($24) and Dialmeup ($4.80).
The New Year's Eve card established a new Century Mile handle record with more than $508,000 wagered on the 13-dash season finale.
