The five-year-old Custard The Dragon gelding Dontpokethedragon shot to the front and held firm to the finish to score a third consecutive win at Flamboro Downs’ top class, the $13,000 Preferred Handicap Pace, on Wednesday night (Dec. 7).
Dontpokethedragon launched from post six to lead to a :28 first quarter with Ideal Perception perched from the pocket. He continued on an uncontested lead through a :57 half and braced for pressure up the backside when Smooth Lou pulled first over. The tempo quickened to three-quarters, timed in 1:25, and Dontpokethedragon fought for the lead all through the stretch while pestered by pocket-shooting Ideal Perception and Smooth Lou to the outside. Dontpokethedragon kept a head in front by the beam to stop the clock in 1:53.4 with Ideal Perception taking second, Smooth Lou third and Clever Character settling for fourth.
Owned by J J J Stables, Paul Sanders and driver Travis Cullen, Dontpokethedragon collected his 26th win from 85 starts and has now earned $241,200. Jodie Cullen trains the $4 winner.
