So Much More Stars In Another Preferred
Millionaire pacing mare So Much More overcame her outside post assignment and a third quarter threat to win the featured $32,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Handicap Pace on Friday night (Nov. 18) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The Don Beatson stable star continued her dominance against the top distaffers at Mohawk, notching her 15th win of the season. Currently, only four other horses have more wins this year in North America.
Regular reinsman James MacDonald had 3-2 favourite So Much More heading to the lead from her assigned post eight and cleared the quick-leaving Gias Surreal (Bob McClure) by the quarter pole in :28.1. So Much More continued to front the field to the half in :57.4 with Delitfulcatherin N (Doug McNair) launching a first-over attack from fourth. She matched strides with So Much More on the way to three-quarters in 1:25.1 but So Much More fought on through a strong headwind in the stretch and pulled 1-1/2 lengths clear late to score in 1:52.1. Gias Surreal edged out Delitfulcatherin N in a photo for place.
So Much More, who finished third in the Breeders Crown Mares Pace on Oct. 29, earned her second straight win in the Preferred and returned $5 to her faithful backers.
The six-year-old Big Jim-Ladysai mare has earned nearly $400,000 from 32 starts this year, pushing her lifetime bankroll to $1,198,255 for owners Don Beatson, Kenneth Beatson and Cole England.
Friday's card also included series action that was highlighted by a 14-1 upset in a $25,000 Pop-Up final as trainer Dean Nixon's three-year-old pacing colt Bring Your Fire earned his first career win in 1:55.4 with Doug McNair catch-driving. Making his 13th start following top five finishes in the opening legs of the series, the Bettors Delight-Bath Beach colt prevailed by a neck over another longshot, Juju Hanover (Austin Sorrie), with Dont Poke The Bear completing the top three. The series was for pacers four years old and younger that were non-winners of one race or $5,000 lifetime.
A new Pop-Up Series for filly and mare pacers began with post 10 proving no problem for Bad Rossa ($13.40), who scored in 1:54 flat for Team Cullen. Jodie Cullen trains the four-year-old Custard The Dragon-Barossa mare while her son Travis worked out the winning trip and shares ownership with Paul Sanders. A Black Diamond (James MacDonald) finished less than a length behind in second and La Petite Grise (Sylain Filion) was third. This series is for non-winners of $35,000 in 2022 or not averaging $1,250 per start in a minimum of 10 starts this year.
The Harvest Series featured Girl Scout Cookie ($14.10), who prevailed from the pocket over pacesetter Baby Bonita (Sylvain Filion), in the $17,000 second leg division for Ontario-sired three-year-old fillies that were non-winners of $30,000 of Sept. 30. Austin Sorrie guided the daughter of State Treasurer-Xanthi Bayama to the 1-3/4-length victory in 1:55.1 for trainer Joe Pereira and owners William Johnstone and William Gillan. Music Box Noise (Mario Baillargeon) was third.
