Flash Cube Claims Rideau Preferred
Guy Gagnon trainee Flash Cube held off his stablemate, odds-on favourite The Light Speed, to score a narrow victory in the $10,500 Preferred Handicap Pace on Sunday night (Nov. 13) at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Driver Stephane Pouliot pushed Flash Cube to the front past a :27.2 first quarter before yielding control to a pocket pop from Getyourlicenseliam passing the stands the first time. The Light Speed then came calling first over into a :56.4 half and loomed closer to the pacesetter to three-quarters in 1:24.4. Getyourlicenseliam fought strongly through the lane but had a trio digging into him. Flash Cube, with the freshest legs, fired through the open stretch to edge past The Light Speed by a neck at the end of a 1:54.1 mile. Midnight Mood closed but settled for third with Getyourlicenseliam just behind in fourth.
A four-year-old gelding by Sportswriter, Flash Cube won his eighth race from 53 starts and has now earned $132,916. Yvan Mondoux owns the gelding who paid $11.70 to win.
Earlier on the card, Sporty Deal protected his position from the pylon post and paced a coast-to-coast mile to deliver as the odds-on choice in 1:55.4 and win his sixth consecutive race. Trainer Stephane Pouliot drove the four-year-old Sportswriter gelding owned by Claude Proulx. He paid $2.90 to win.
