Windsun Callum Wires Up Foes

After failing to convert off a two-hole trip in last week’s feature race at Kawartha Downs, Aaron Byron took a more aggressive approach with Windsun Callum and the two came away victorious in Monday’s follow-up attempt

.

Windsun Callum, who was sent off as the 3-2 choice in the seven-horse affair, left quickly and found himself parked while engaged in a quarter-pole battle The Machster. The two hustled past the quarter pole in :27.1 in the $12,000 Preferred #2 event before Windsun Callum muscled his way to the lead. Once in charge of the tempo, the gelding tore through middle panels of :57.1 and 1:25.3 before using a :30-second final frame to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Willies Place in 1:55.3. Amazon Art swept from last to finish third.

Trained by Jeff Byron for owners Maryan Byron, Dave Byron, Craig Wallwin and Mardon Stables, the eight-year-old son of Cams Card Shark-Star Magic won for the first time this season and for the 19th time in his career. The lion’s share of the purse bumped his lifetime earnings to $311,645.
