'Batterup' Doubles Up In Truro's Top Class
Truro Raceway's top class turned into a two-horse race on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 6) with Batterup Hanover and trainer/driver Paul Langille defeating the George Rennison-trained American Risk and Redmond Doucet as the favourites ran away on the field.
Sprinting off the gate from the outside posts in the featured $2,500 Winners Over Pace, American Risk and Batterup Hanover raced one-two well ahead of the rest through a sizzling :26.3 opening quarter and middle splits of :56.2 and 1:25.4. Hot on Doucet's helmet, Batterup Hanover popped the pocket around the final turn with an eighth of a mile to go and swept by the pacesetter in the stretch to win by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:54.2. Frontier Cruiser and Robert Laffin were the best of the rest, finishing more than 13 lengths behind.
Sent postward at odds of 1-2, the favoured Batterup Hanover paid $3.10 to win. The victory was his second in a row, following up a 1:52.4 season's best score last weekend.
The four-year-old Betting Line-Beachbunny Hanover gelding, who has won four races from 16 seasonal starts, competes for Nova Scotia owners Debbie Francis, Rosanne Langille, Douglas Lowthers and Chantel Langille.
Batterup Hanover is a career winner of a dozen races and more than $55,000 in purses.
While facing off in the feature, Langille and Rennison joined forces earlier in the opener with the debuting All Bets On Tex, who defeated older pacers by 6-1/2 lengths in 1:56.4 to established a new track record for two-year-old colts. The All Bets Off-Tampa Town colt knocked one-fifth of a second off the former mark set by P H Super Dave back in 2005. The overall two-year-old male record still stands at 1:54 flat, set two weeks ago by gelding Malignity. All Bets On Tex is owned by Jeffrey Lilley, Blair MacLauchlan, Kent Livingston and Marc Gallant.
