Lexington Selected Yearling Sale Concludes
The 2022 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale wrapped up with the fifth session on Friday evening (Oct. 7) at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion in Lexington, Kentucky.
Behest, Hip 809, garnered the highest bid out of a quartet of Downbytheseaside offspring that topped the final session. The filly was purchased for $200,000 by Brian Brown of Ostrander, Ohio. Consigned by the Hunterton Sales Agency, Behest is the third foal out of the American Ideal mare Endowment, a half sibling to O'Brien and Dan Patch Award winner Artspeak (1:47.4 - $1,770,980).
Sea Jammer, Hip 802, was among the top priced yearlings with a bid of $160,000 from David Cohen of Sudbury, Massachusetts, agent for Micki Rae Stables. Consigned by Peninsula Farm, the Downbytheseaside colt is the first foal out of the A Rocknroll Dance mare Dancin With Jammy, a half-sister to Highalator (1:48 - $675,764). His second dam is former world record holder Higher And Higher (1:49.1 - $944,224).
Downbytheseaside yearlings Twenty Five, Hip 869, and Flyin Bullets, Hip 873, each sold for $150,000.
Twenty Five was purchased by Burke Racing Stable of Fredericktown, Pennsylvania. Consigned by Diamond Creek, the colt is out of the Santanna Blue Chip mare Hula Shuffle, a half sibling to Maltese Artist (1:48.3 - $2,340,872) and Artesian (1:49.2 - $987,884). Twenty Five is a half brother to the Burke-trained Ohio Sires Stakes filly Twenty (1:52h - $172,912).
Flyin Bullets, Hip 873, was purchased by agent Ngairee Umholtz of Sagamore Hills, Ohio. The filly from the Anvil And Lace Farm consignment is the first foal out of the The Panderosa mare Pistol Packin Mama (1:49.1 - $425,365), an Ohio Sires Stakes champion and half-sibling to four $100,000-plus winners including Artful Way (1:49 - $843,294) and Isitfridayyet (1:50.2 - $333,274).
Selling as Hip 876, Swaggy Cal, a son of Rockin Image, rounded out the top five highest priced yearlings of the final session with a $130,000 price tag. Purchased by Greg Luther of Blacklick, Ohio from the Hunterton Sales Agency consignment, the colt is the first foal out of the Art Major mare Pristine Beauty. Swaggy Cal's dam is a full sister to Grand Circuit stakes winners Precocious Beauty (1:50.1 - $869,920) and Prescient Beauty (1:50.4 - $495,860), and a half sibling to O'Brien and Dan Patch Award winner Sportswriter (1:48.3 - $1,649,411).
The fifth session featured 138 yearlings with gross sales totalling $4,854,000. The average price was comparable to last year's final day of $35,713, down slightly to $35,174 with seven yearlings selling for six figures.
Over the course of the five-day sale, a total of 886 yearlings sold for $65,289,000. This total bested the previous high for gross of $56.68 million, set last year when 863 horses passed through the ring, marking a 15.1-percent increase. The average yearling price of $73,690 was also up substantially from the 2021 average of $65,692.
The offspring of Captaintreacherous was in high demand throughout the sale, with 42 yearlings selling for a top average price of $154,429 and leading gross sales for a pacing stallion of $6,486,000. Forty-eight yearlings from the first crop of Greenshoe produced the highest average for a trotting stallion at $130,792 while Walner was the the leading sire of the entire sale with gross sales of $6,949,000 for 60 yearlings.
