Mando Fun Fires As Northside Returns
Live harness racing returned to Northside Downs on Saturday (Oct. 1) with Mando Fun continuing to assert himself as one of the best competitors in Cape Breton this season.
Mando Fun drew the rail for Saturday's feature, the $1,600 Winners Over Pace. The betting public assessed the nine-year-old as the horse to beat, sending him off as the 3-5 choice, and the veteran pacer didn't disappoint his backers or his connections.
Driver Ryan Campbell used that inside starting spot for Mando Fun to grab control of the race early, sprinting out and forcing his six rivals behind him. There wasn't a terribly stressful moment for Mando Fun through fractions of :29.2, :59.4 and 1:29 but his opponents looked poise to threaten in the stretch drive. Campbell called on Mando Fun to dig deep, and the favourite responded in kind to win by a length in 1:59.1. Gentry Seelster (Mark Pezzarello) and Revenant (Ardon Mofford) chased in futility to round out the triactor.
Trainer Ronald Seymour co-owns Mando Fun (Badlands Hanover - Millenium Ball) along with Aubrey Cameron of Glace Bay, N.S. This afternoon's win marked the sixth score on the season and 37th lifetime from 163 career starts, lifting earnings to $94,370 lifetime. He paid $3.30 to win.
