Favourites First In Kawartha Prospect
Odds-on choices Marshall Zhukov and Gimmie A Corona took their respective divisions of the Prospect Series at Kawartha Downs on Saturday night (Sept. 10).
Trainer-driver Mario Baillargeon sat third with Marshall Zhukov in the $7,100 Prospect Series for two-year-old pacing colts. After opening splits of :26 and :56.2, Baillargeon pulled his charge off the pylons and moved for the lead to three-quarters in 1:25. From there, the Shadow Play colt cruised to the finish to clock a 1:54.2 mile, finishing 2-3/4 lengths better than pacesetter Other Peoples Beer. Olczyk finished third.
Marshall Zhukov is a homebred for Frederick MacDonald. He won his sixth race from seven starts, has now earned $24,600 and paid $2.10 to win.
Conditioner Meg Crone snagged the top-two spots in the $7,300 Prospect Series dash for two-year-old pacing fillies. Driver Nick Boyd sent Gimmie A Corona to the lead with her stablemate Mending Fences securing the pocket. The pair raced one-two through a clip of :29.3, :59.1 and 1:29.4 to then finish separated by 1-1/2 lengths at the finish of a 1:57.1 mile. Paddy Melt, mounting a first-over challenge midrace, finished another three lengths behind in third.
Gimmie A Corona is a homebred for owner 83 Racing. She won her third race from six starts, has now earned $13,454 and paid $3 to win.
