Mohawk's Tuesday Qualifiers Complete
Woodbine Mohawk Park hosted eight qualifiers on a bright and sunny morning in Campbellville, Ont. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Preferred trotter Spartan General, who last raced mid-June, won his second straight qualifier for the husband and wife, driver and trainer team of Chris and Camilla Christoforou. After sitting fourth through first half fractions of :28.3 and :58.4, Spartan General took control on the way to three-quarters in 1:28 then trotted away to win by 6-1/2 lengths in 1:56.1. Conquest As and Mister Walker completed the top three order of finish. A career winner of more than $200,000 and 11 races, the five-year-old Muscle Hill-Severence gelding is owned by Charalambos Christoforou and Irvann Holdings Inc.
James Edward Lewis' homebred sophomore colt E L Gladiator was one of the fastest winners of the morning session with a 17-length romp over three others in 1:55.3. Driven by Jason Ryan, the pacer looped early leader Beat Reporter (:28.3, :58.3) nearing three-quarters in 1:28 and took off. The Up The Credit-E L Miss Barracuda colt, who was a two-time winner as a rookie, last raced in early May and has won back-to-back qualifying starts since for trainer Adrian Hickey.
Capers 3 Stable's two-year-old pacing colt Boom Town Boy was also a 1:55.3 winner after leading through panels of :28.3, :58.1 and 1:28 then holding off the pocket-popping Bettors Delight colt Fade To Light by a head. Austin Sorrie drove the Betterthancheddar-Boom Town Girl colt, who has made just two career starts, for trainer Wayne McGean.
Among the two-year-old qualifying winners was the debuting pacing filly Talk Curdy To Me, who closed from third in the stretch with a :28.4 last quarter to win in 1:57 by two lengths over the Hes Watching filly Hello Life. Louis-Philippe Roy drove the brown daughter of Betterthancheddar out of Keepers Destiny for trainer Chantal Mitchell.
