Long-Awaited Summerside Match Up Sunday
The two best colts on the Eastern Seaboard of Canada will lock bridles from outside posts in a rich division of the Joe O’Brien Memorial stake on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 28) at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
The Prince County oval has 12-dashes on the day featuring the Lady Slipper for two-year-old pacing fillies and the O’Brien for two-year-old pacing colts.
Race 11 has a $27,200 O’Brien Gold division for rookie colts featuring the long awaited stakes showdown between Malignity and Tobins Profit. Malignity has won his last five races from the Paul Langille barn for owners Debbie Francis of Sweets Corner and Rosanne Langille of Lower Onslow, N.S. The Malicious colt has yet to see a credible challenge on the stakes trail as he won his latest start in line to Langille in 1:56.1 but will finally face off with Tobins Profit, who starts from post 7 for driver Jason Hughes. The Danny Romo trained Tobins Profit beat Malignity in their career debut on June 24 at the Truro Raceway in Nova Scotia in a $1,400 overnight event before the latter began his winning streak. Tobins Profit would reel off a streak of his own with five straight victories before making a break Old Home Week and finishing fourth in an Atlantic Sires Stakes event.
The Backstretch Beat puts Malignity on top of the rich stakes event.
“The purse, the line up and the long awaited stakes matchup is making this race just like Christmas in August. Malignity has been exceptional so far in his career but the win streak could easily end today. Either way this guy looks like a real champion and won’t give up the fight easily. If you’re a race fan, don’t miss this dash.”
Race 3 is the lone $13,600 Grassroots division of the O’Brien stake for two-year-old colts.
The Lady Slipper for rookie fillies has $17,100 Gold divisions in Race 8 and 12.
Our Girl Annie has a three-race undefeated streak on the line in Race 12 with Corey MacPherson aboard for trainer Eddy Doucette from post 6.
Race 8 will see Rock N Roll Cays the top choice with post 6 for driver Ken Murphy and trainer Jeff Holmes.
The Lady Slipper stake also has $8,550 Grassroots divisions in Race 5, 7 and 10.
The Island Oceans Trot Series leg, presented by JD Marine and Diving Inc., hits the track in Race 6 for a $4,300 purse. Jessiejesorjessica (Driven by David Dowling) is top choice from post 5.
