Faves Foiled In Grassroots; No Contest Declared
A trio of OSS Grassroots divisions for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings were scheduled to go postward Monday evening at a rain-soaked Woodbine Mohawk, and as scheduled they did go off. However, one division didn’t finish.
The third division was declared a ‘No Contest’ by the AGCO Judges as a result of an early mishap that affected Feel The Force and driver Trevor Henry.
The Bill Budd trainee made a break behind the starting gate, and things got worse for the trotter when the Jawbreaker bit broke. Driver Trevor Henry bailed out of the race bike and the trotter galloped away.
Realizing safety was going to be an issue, the ‘No Contest’ siren was sounded and the remaining drivers pulled up their horses.
Both Henry and Feel The Force came away from the incident unscathed.
There were no details at the time of writing with regards to when the final division would be rescheduled.
In the $22,200 first division, it was Resolute Bay turning a two-hole trip into a 1:55 triumph for the tandem of driver James MacDonald and trainer Harry Poulton.
The son of Resolve-Tequila Slammer tracked Forrest through fractions of :27.2, :57.1 and 1:27.2 before going on the attack against that foe in the lane.
Thestable Resolute Bay of Guelph, Ont. owns the gelding who improved this year’s record to 2-1-3 from 13 starts with the win. The four-time winner pushed his lifetime earnings over $50,000 in the process.
Sea Can wanted no part of the early speed in the second division, but he was a force to be reckoned with in the late stages of the mile for the duo of driver Bob McClure and trainer Mark Etsell.
The son of Muscle Mass-SOS Respect got away sixth and watched as Renegade Gypsy (:28.3) and Lexus Ranger (:58.4 and 1:27.2) took turns on the lead. Sea Can was angled off the rail on the way to the half, and his steady gains saw him improved to be third on the outside at the three-quarter pole. Sea Can kicked home in :28.2 to win by a neck over race favourite Renegade Gypsy in 1:56. Taking home third prize was Archery Seelster.
Mark Etsell, Terry Devos and Peter Porter share ownership on the gelding who boasts a 4-2-0 record from 12 trips to the track this year. The six-time winner boosted his earnings to $128,868 with the victory.
