Sobey Trainees Triple At Track On 2
Nathan Sobey scored his first Track On 2 training win of the season on Sunday afternoon... then his second... and his third.
Four-year-old pacer Crazy I M ($6.60), driven by Phil Giesbrecht, gave Sobey his first win on the card in the second race and the Arthur, Alta. horseman later drove three-year-old pacing colt Light My Shadow ($3) and filly Introduce Yourself ($4.30) to victories in their respective fourth and eighth race assignments.
Sobey capped off the 11-race card with one more winner's circle appearance after driving 11-year-old pacer Rural Art ($3) to victory in the finale for trainer Mona Roy.
With his Sunday training triple, the Sobey stable now has 29 wins this year, putting his lifetime total just shy of 250.
Sunday's card included the third leg of the Funky Monkey Claiming Series for $11,000 claiming pacers. Litizor and trainer/driver Jamie Gray sat off the pace in third for most of the mile before wearing down pacesetter HF Patrick, driven by Sobey, to win the $4,100 division by three-quarters of a length in a career-best 1:55.4 clocking. Firm Ringo closed from the backfield to show for driver Gilles Bouvier.
With two-leg winner Captain Fireball absent, Litizor was the 9-5 favourite and returned $5.80 to win after just missing with a second-place finish in the opening round on July 31 and finishing third in leg two on Aug. 7.
Gray co-owns the four-year-old Vertical Horizon gelding, a five-time winner with $32,552 banked lifetime, with Jackson Wittup of Calgary, Alta.
