Starting outside of her nine rivals from post 10, 6-1 shot Fashion Schooner overcame a poor post draw to win the 97th edition of the $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks for three-year-old trotting fillies on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 6) at Meadowlands Racetrack.

Driver Tim Tetrick fashioned a front end victory to pick up his third Oaks trophy with Fashion Schooner scoring in 1:51.2 by 2-1/4 lengths. Trained by Jim Campbell and owned by Fashion Farms, the homebred daughter of Walner followed in the hoofprints of her dam, Broadway Schooner, who posted a 6-1 upset when winning the 2009 edition of the Oaks.

"That's everything," said Fashion Farms' Jules Siegel. "We still have the mother and she's producing just what we want."

After working to the top over fellow outside leavers Mon Cheval (Andrew McCarthy) and Pink Coco Chanel (Joe Bongiorno) through a scorching :26.1 opener, Fashion Schooner stole a second quarter breather to the half in :55.1 and trotted on to three-quarters in 1:23.1 before opening up heading for home. Pink Coco Chanel overtook Mon Cheval in the stretch then held off late-closers Yanaba (Brian Sears) and Manon (Dexter Dunn) in a photo finish for the minor spoils.

"When the half flashed up in :55 I was happy and from there on I just let her keep moving and didn't let anybody get too close," stated Tetrick. "And you know what? We got the job done."

Fashion Schooner paid $14 to win as the 6-1 third choice behind elimination winners Warrawee Xenia (Bob McClure) and Venerable (David Miller) -- the former filly caught Fashion Schooner at the wire in their elimination but broke stride in the first turn halting a seven-race win streak while the latter filly was unable to improve position overland on the backside and went off stride in the stretch. 

Winless in three starts as a two-year-old, Fashion Schooner now boast five victories, two seconds and a third from eight sophomore starts with earnings soaring to $468,462.
