SC Rewind: Picture Parade - The 1,000 Club

Picture Parade

This week's edition of Rewind takes on the title of 'Picture Parade',  a monthly feature of this column.  The rules and regulations are the same involved in identifying the vintage pictures, with a slight twist.   If you like or even recognize the stars of yesteryears, this one has quite a collection of veteran drivers from across the land.  Many of these personalities eventually made their way to the Hall of Fame in either Canada or the U.S.; a number reached both.

Back in 1964 the U.S.T.A. published a list of drivers who had by then achieved a win total of at least 1,000 career wins by the end of that year.  At the time that goal was the aim of most accomplished horsemen and judging by the length of the list it was quite a feat to be listed there.  A total of just 30 names appeared on this coveted list.  It is interesting to note that just one driver was credited with more than 2,000 wins although Canadian-born Joe O'Brien was on the cusp.  Unlike the years that followed, a total of just four Canadian-born drivers were included on the 1964 list. Only one listed a Canadian home address and that was misleading as he had been in the U.S. for many years.

1000 win club

A familiar footnote that always accompanies a piece like this is that many of the drivers who made this list had actually scored several more wins in their career but they were in the period before accurate record keeping was in place.

Have fun figuring out who these fellows are.   A number are wearing the old silk hats.  No clues so I will just repeat the same question for each one. One word of caution, Herve Filion was just 24 at this time and had not yet reached win No. 1,000.

WARNING - To make it a little more fun one of the 11 pictured below is not on the list.  Identify him if you can or designate as "Not Listed".

Closing Note: I am hoping to have enough pictures of those on the list to do a second quiz on this same topic in the near future.

Quote For The Week: Once again this more resembles a short story but I do find it quite interesting and humorous. A quotable quote from the great Herve Filion.

Herve was once asked by a reporter about his voracious appetite for cigarettes and questioned the wisdom of consuming almost three packs a day.  He replied "If I take care of myself I will live to be old and die...If I don't take care of myself I will just do the second part."

Blast From The Past

Blast from the Past

When we read of certain horses being described as "A Handful" how would you like to have this guy's job?  I can't even count how many he is driving.

Billy Haughton - thanks for the clue, Robert!!!

The correct answers to this week's Picture Parade photos are shown below :

# 1 - Billy Haughton at Saratoga very early in his career. ( He was # 1 in career wins with 2256 wins by 1964 and # 1 on my list of pictures)
# 2 - Frank Ervin (1071 wins ) with Good Time
# 3 - Joe O'Brien (1970 wins) with Aaron L in the very early years in the Maritimes
# 4 - Clint Hodgins (1510 wins)
# 5 - Jimmy Cruise (1401)
# 6 - Johnny Conroy legendary Maritime driver (He was the only driver not on the 1000 win list )
# 7 - Wm. D. "Buddy" Gilmour (1553 wins)
# 8 - Johnny Chapman (1314 wins) driving Big Towner
# 9 - Del Insko (1229 wins)
# 10 - Sanders Russell (1070 wins) - I love when I see a driver wearing a necktie
# 11 - Eddie Cobb ( 1274 wins ) driving Lord Butler
Thanks for your interest, always appreciated. I believe I have enough pictures not used here for another edition like this one so stay tuned.

No one entered a name for # 1 yet . There I just gave you a clue ! Remember all of the pictured drivers but one are on the list at the top .

#5 James Cruise
#11 Eddie Cobb

2. Frank Ervin 3 Joe O'Brien 4 Cat Manzi 5 John Findlay 7 Bud Gilmour 8 John Chapman not Governor Skipper 9 Del Insko 10 Sanders Russell 11 Alan Meyers.

Paul Chapman. #2 is Frank Ervin, #4 Clint Hodgins, #6 Bud Gilmour, #8 my uncle John Chapman and Big Towner, #9 Del Insko, #10 Saunders Russell

Most of the others are easy, but I think #6 is Johnny Conroy, a Maritime legend.
#1 and #5 would be guesses.
I think #3 is Joe Obrien.
Thanks, Robert
