Stash The Cookies Circles Century Mares
With a three-wide move on the backstretch, Stash The Cookies went from last to first in the blink of an eye and drew off to score her third consecutive victory in the $13,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred Handicap Pace at Century Downs on Friday (July 22).
After trailing the field of six through sharp opening panels of :27.4 and :56.4 over the sloppy track, Stash The Cookies circled her rivals by the 1:26 third quarter mark and drew off by five lengths in the stretch en route to the 1:55.3 victory for trainer/driver Logan Gillis.
Handicapped with the outside post six, she returned $7.40 to win as the 5-2 favourite. If Only Id Known (Mike Hennessy) edged out Past Affair (Dave Kelly) in a photo for place as they closed within 2-1/4 lengths of the winner at the end.
Riding a three-race win streak, Stash The Cookies improved her seasonal record to 7-6-3 from 18 starts and has banked more than $60,000 so far during her six-year-old campaign. A 17-time winner overall, she has earned $186,729 lifetime.
Gillis trains the Sunfire Bluechip-Saucy B mare for owner Derek Gilbert of Brandon, Man.
