Freshman Filly Trotters Seek NYSS Success
The two $51,500 divisions of the New York Sire Stakes for the two-year-old filly trotters that arrive at Buffalo Raceway on Wednesday afternoon (July 6) brings along a mixed bag of results thus far in their young racing careers.
The first bracket, set for the second event on the card, has a pair of fillies who put in pretty game efforts in their lone NYSS outing. In the other bracket, scheduled to go as the fifth race, the NYSS will be a new experience for them all but two of the entrants are fresh off $15,000 victories in the Excelsior Stakes.
J Wow (Crazy Wow-Rise N Shine) heads the field in the first division of the NYSS. She finished in a good second place, 3-1/2 lengths behind Canterbury Hanover on June 20 at Saratoga. J Wow will start from the post two for driver Jim Marohn Jr.
Defiant Lady (Devious Man-Marina Grace) comes out the same June 20 race at Saratoga where she was fourth, only four lengths behind Canterbury Hanover. Kevin Cummings is slated to drive the David Dewhurst trainee.
Metro Matty (Mels Hall-Order By Matilda) comes to Western New York off a 2-3/4-length score in a conditioned race at Pocono Downs on June 28 in 1:58.3. She'll score from the inside for driver Mark MacDonald.
The rest of the field includes Jeans Action (Jim Morrill Jr.) and Seven Bridges Road (Mark Whitcroft).
The second division has two combatants arriving fresh off victories in the Excelsior A series at Saratoga on June 20.
Crazy Lovin (Crazy Wow-Celebrity Lovin) went wire to wire in her race, winning by 1-3/4 lengths over Melodrama in 2:02.2. John Stark Jr. will get in the call in the bike and will start from post four.
Delightful Sky AS (Conway Hall-Delightful AS) rallied late to win by 1-1/2 lengths in 2:03.1. Morrill Jr. is listed as the driver and starts from post five with the Anette Lorentzon trainee.
The rest of the field includes El Mission Goddess (Marohn Jr.), Nice Top Line (Kyle Cummings) and Mari (TBA).
The Buffalo Raceway track record for two-year-old filly trotters is 1:59, established on July 11, 2018 by Amal Hall.
There's 11 races scheduled for the 1:30 p.m. post, including a pair of $15,000 Excelsior A races. A $6,200 non-betting Excelsior B affair will go off at 1:10 p.m.
