Southwind Amazon Scores In Michigan Final

Southwind Amazon captured the featured $28,000 Michigan Mini Series Final on Saturday (June 25) at Northville Downs and notched career win No. 120 in his 305th start.

Southwind Amazon and driver Art McIlmurray left hard from post 7 to drop into fourth down the backside to the quarter pole. Meanwhile, up front, Princess Rockette and Lying in Cash battled each other all the way past the half, setting fractions of :26.1 and :54.0 when McIlmurray and Amazon tipped out three wide into the clubhouse turn.

The speedy and experienced duo then launched up the backside to trip the three-quarters in 1:23 before drawing off down the stretch to win by six lengths, stopping the timer in 1:52.2 — just two ticks off his own all-time Northville Downs track record. Jets Sureshot closed to be second and Lying in Cash settled for a hard-fought third.

Ameer Najor owns and Paul Holzman trains Southwind Amazon, whose career earnings now total $1,347,721. He paid $3 to win.

Northville Downs concluded its successful Spring meet Saturday evening. Live racing resumes Sept. 9, which marks the start of the Fall meet. Opening weekend will feature Michigan Sires Stakes Finals. First race post time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (EDT) each race night.
