More Pop-Up Action At Mohawk
There was no stopping the favourites in the latest Pop-Up Series at Woodbine Mohawk Park as Itty Bitty and Big Diamond scored front-end victories in their $12,500 opening leg divisions on Friday night (June 24).
This series is for pacing fillies and mares that have started for a purse of $10,000 or less in one of their last four starts.
Itty Bitty ($4.60) opened the series with a 1:53.4 score on the front end. Driver Jonathan Drury drove the eight-year-old Always A Virgin mare to the 1-1/4-length victory while Randomirogeo advanced first-over to place with pocket-sitter Perfect Romi following in third.
Itty Bitty, who is now a 30-time career winner with more than $440,000 banked, is trained by Carmen Auciello and owned by Stephen Klunowski of North York, Ont.
Collared twice in the mile, favourite Big Diamond ($6.40) battled back to win the second division in 1:54.3 with Sylvain Filion aboard for trainer Jay Cochlin.
The five-year-old Big Jim mare fought off Society Jill heading into the final turn and then the three-wide closer Day To Party through the stretch. Digging in, Big Diamond prevailed by three-quarters of a length over Day To Party while Cantstopthefeelin rallied from the backfield to show.
Big Diamond has earned seven of her 15 career wins this year for owner Tanya Lawson of Seaforth, Ont. She sits just shy of the $100,000 earnings mark.
