Bettim Again Back In Truro Winner's Circle
Nova Scotia stakes winner Bettim Again returned to Truro Raceway a winner, holding off his rivals on both sides in the Friday night feature.
Bettim Again, who won the Nova Scotia Stakes and Carl & Marg MacKenzie Memorial Stakes last fall at Truro, delivered as the 2-5 favourite, leading all the way from the inside post in the $2,500 Winners Over Pace for driver Todd Trites. He paid $2.80 to win.
The four-year-old Malicious-Bettim Laura gelding set fractions of :28.1, :57.4 and 1:27.2 before holding off his four foes in the stretch for the 1:56.2 victory over a 'good' track. Risin Horizon (Darren Crowe) followed in the pocket and shot through inside down the lane to come within a half-length of the winner, finishing with broken equipment, while Thunder Alley (Andrew Campbell) persisted for third after being parked the whole mile. Well Did (Paul Langille) was locked and loaded with pace behind Bettim Again and edged out Harry G (Ernest Laffin) for fourth. The compact field was only separated by 1-1/2 lengths at the finish line.
Bettim Again opened his season competing stateside mostly at Dover Downs before returning to Atlantic Canada and the George Rennison stable and finishing fourth in last weekend's Walter Dale Invitational at Exhibition Park. Friday's victory was his second this year from a dozen starts.
The winner of 13 races and more than $92,000 in owned by breeder Jeff Lilley of Charlottetown, P.E.I., and partners Blair MacLauchlan of Charlottetown and Ian MacDonald of Lower Sackville, N.S.
