Favourites Deliver In Pop Up Series
The favourites lived up to expectations in the second round of the Pop-Up Series for male pacers, which was comprised of a pair of $15,000 divisions on Friday night (June 10) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The series is for non-winners of $15,000 in 2022 or not averaging $1,250 per start in 2022 for a minimum of 10 starts.
A1stable's Hervey Hanover improved off a close runner-up finish in last week's opening round, advancing from mid-pack to wear down pacesetter Bayfield Beach (Bob McClure) for the one-length victory in 1:51.2 with Doug McNair catch-driving. Trained by Jodie Cullen, the six-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding paid $5.40 to win as the 8-5 favourite. Mr Mach Jimmy (Yannick Gingras) closed from the backfield to show.
Hervey Hanover missed by a neck in the opening leg to Macks Stable's Shadow In Red, who was a repeat winner in the series on Friday for driver Sylvain Filion and trainer Richard Moreau.
Sent postward as the 1-5 favourite, Shadow In Red led all the way to win his division in 1:51.3 -- matching his mile time from a week ago -- by nearly four lengths over Pipewrench Charlie (Travis Cullen) and Dragon Energy (Trevor Henry). The five-year-old Shadow Play gelding returned $2.70 to win.
