Berube Bags Five At Rideau
Driver Pascal Berube stole the show on Sunday (June 5) at Rideau Carleton Raceway by winning five of the evening’s 10 races, including the $10,500 Preferred Handicap Pace with Major Hill in 1:51.1.
Major Hill settled for the pocket to longshot Saulsbrook Kaisen, who refused to relinquish the lead to a :26.1 first quarter and maintained his speed to a :54.1 half. Favourite The Light Speed started to charge for the front from fifth and progressed to within a length of the lead as the pace accelerated to three-quarters in 1:22. The pair battled through the final turn while Berube revved Major Hill off the pocket trip and swung him wide for the drive. The nine-year-old Art Major gelding surged past the tiring speedsters to cross the line 1-1/4 lengths in front of The Light Speed, while Saulsbrook Kaisen settled for third and Lovemyrockinbird finished fourth.
Trained by Yves Tessier for owner Francois Morin, Major Hill won his sixth race from 16 starts this season and his 33rd from 248 overall. He has earned $566,641 and paid $7.90 to win.
The win in the Preferred marked four on the night for Berube. Prior to that race, he visited the winner’s circle with Mister Godro ($7.70), Sunny Bo ($7) and Radley Hanover ($10.80). He wrapped the night in the nightcap with an upset win by Navalny ($25.60).
