PEI Stakes Season Starts Sunday
The 2022 stakes season gets underway Sunday (May 29) on Prince Edward Island with Canada’s oldest Standardbred stake, the P.E.I. Colt Stakes, at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
Stash It Away will look to continue his champion career in Race 12 of the afternoon with first race post time at 1:00 p.m. for the 13-dash event. Corey MacPherson will drive the son of Pang Shui for trainer Kevin MacLean and owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford leaving from post four in the $11,200 three-year-old colt Gold division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes. His top rivals are rail sitter St Charlesfireball (Marc Campbell) and Middleton Terror (David Dowling) from post three.
The other $11,200 Gold division for sophomore colts is in Race 10 as Fern Hill General is the top choice. He'll start from post five from the Earl Smith barn for owners Peter Smith of Stratford and Gerald Morrissey of Charlottetown. Brodie MacPhee will be above the wheels of the Malicious gelding. Fern Hill Gusto (Campbell) is a top contender with post four along with Alldawaytocardigan (Myles Heffernan Sr.) who was victorious in the Bremner Memorial stake his last start at Exhibition Park Raceway in New Brunswick.
The colts also have $5,600 Grassroots divisions in Races 1, 3, 6 and 8.
In three-year-old pacing filly P.E.I. Colt Stakes action, JJ Scarlett will be the one to knock off in Race 11, the $12,200 Gold division. Danny Gillis drives the daughter of Tobago Cays for trainer Walter Walker and owner Wwggmacinnismackinnon Stable of Inverness, N.S., coming in fresh off a 1:56.4 qualifier. Her chief rivals are slated to be Therealprincess (MacPherson) with post one and Saltwater Storm (Mark Bradley) from post three.
Ultimate Longshot went all the way in Bremner Memorial action last week but must overcome post five on her way to victory on Sunday for driver David Dowling, trainer Earl Watts and owners Windemere Farms of Springvale and New Brunswick owners Clive Balderston and River Valley Management. Woodmere Jazz was third that day but will look for redemption from post four with Gilles Barrieau picking up the drive. Cutter Loose (Campbell) is another chief rival from post two.
A trio of $6,100 Grassroots divisions for sophomore fillies will go behind the gate in Races 2, 4 and 9.
