Record Opening Day At Clinton Raceway
Live harness racing made its return for the 2022 season at Huron County's Clinton Raceway on Sunday afternoon (May 22). Clinton welcomed a large opening day crowd for the unofficial kick off to summer. An opening day record of $83,716 was wagered on the 10-race card.
Fundraising was back in full swing at Clinton with over $3,000 raised for the Central Huron Secondary School. The winner of the 50/50 raffle took home over $1,000.
Maiden pacers lined up behind the gate for the Howard Kennedy Memorial Pace in race one. Four-year-old Sunshine Beach gelding Gus Is Back rode the pocket trip before making a late move to capture the $4,400 event in 2:04 for trainer/driver Mark Goddard and owner Perry Staikopoulos. St Lads Ryan finished a half-length behind and Museum Tour rounded out the top three.
Goddard and Travis Henry each had driving doubles on the card.
There were no winning tickets sold in the race 10 Super Hi-5, so a carryover of $860 will be up for grabs in the finale next Sunday. Live racing returns to Clinton Raceway next Sunday, May 29 for Seniors Day.
