SC Rewind: O.S.S. Picture Parade

Picture Parade

In this week's Rewind Robert Smith offers up a collection of old photographs taken at various Ontario Sires Stakes events over the years.  With the beginning of this year's schedule set to kick off the 49th season of the colt classics,  it's  time to take a look back at a number of events.  As with past "Picture Parades" readers are invited to send in as many answers as they wish.

Note: A few of this week's pictures contain multiple connections to the winning horse but the correct answer to each photo will be confined to correctly naming the driver.  If anyone cares to name others in the picture or otherwise comment, please feel free to do so.  Anything you add is always welcome. Since no clues will be given for this grouping,  the same standard question will be repeated under each picture.

OSS Review For 1985

The following video was provided courtesy of Marty Adler, long-time race announcer and media personality.  It is narrated by Frank Salive and contains a lot of memorable personalities, highlights and interviews from the 1985 OSS racing season.  It is an interesting walk down memory lane. If you like to recall the best of the past you will surely enjoy seeing this piece of fairly recent history.

Remembering Dr. Glen Brown

This week's Rewind was completed and ready to go to press well before hearing the news of the passing of Dr. Glen Brown, which occurred on May 13th.  As I prepared this column I couldn't help but think of Dr. Brown on numerous occasions and the lasting influence he had on the creation of the OSS series.  I had the pleasure and privilege of numerous "chats" with him over the years about this now almost 50 year program. His positive influence on so many aspects of harness racing and its growth during his lifetime place him in very special company.  I am indebted to him for sharing so many  of his memories. I extend my condolences to his remaining family.

I have always felt personally so well treated by this man.  Whenever I called upon him for information he was so unbelievably gracious to even a little guy like me.

Quote For The Week: "If I had to live my life again, I'd make all the same mistakes, only sooner."  From Tallulah Bankhead.

Happy Victoria Day holiday weekend.  Back in the day when this was referred to as May 24th weekend, it was for many years the unofficial start of the racing season.

Love this video wrap up!!! If there are other such videos, especially from the early years, let's have 'em!

1. Gordy Waples 2. Maybe Jim Rankin 3. Doug Brown 4. Rajean Dagniegh 5.? 6. Pat Marsden, Dave Wall 7. Woody 8. Jack,Bill and Ruth Herbert 9. Bill Gale, Bruce Shea 10. Don Davies, Ken McElroy. Thanks Robert!

Number 6 is Dave Wall and of course Dr . Brown is presenting the award in number 4 . I agree with your comments that Dr. Brown was equally gracious to the small time players in the industry. When leaving an Armstrong showing in the early 80 ‘s he insisted that we join some of the prominent names at that time with the saying that a bidder is as good as a buyer .
