Five For Jimmy Freight

The fire keeps burning for Jimmy Freight in his comeback season as the seven-year-old Sportswriter stallion racked his fifth consecutive victory when winning the $39,000 Free For All Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday (May 14).

Off as the odds-on favourite, Jimmy Freight settled off the speed set by Tattoo Artist in his first start back north of the border. Tattoo Artist took the field by the quarter in :27 before yielding command to American History up the backside as he remained rolling towards a :54.1 half and to three-quarters in 1:21.2. Fatigue hit American History off the corner and Tattoo Artist revved out of the pocket to take the lead in the stretch as Jimmy Freight uncorked a furious rally to edge to the lead and win by three-quarter lengths in 1:48.1 while pacing his final quarter in :25.1. Tattoo Artist settled for second with Funatthebeach N riding the pylons for third and Revolt taking fourth.

Owned by Adriano Sorella, Jimmy Freight won his ninth race from 15 starts this season and his 30th from 69 overall. Richard Moreau trains the winner of $1,633,125 while Louis-Philippe Roy had the driving assignment. He paid $3.50 to win.

Another Woodbine Mohawk Park stalwart returned to the winner’s circle a few races earlier when So Much More landed a 1:50.3 blow on her competition in the $32,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Handicap.

Driver James MacDonald motored the six-year-old Big Jim mare for the lead into a :26.4 first quarter to grab control and cruise to a :55.1 half. Kickupyaheels N began a first-over grind out of fifth moving for the final turn and ranged to within a length of the pacesetter coming to three-quarters in 1:23.2. So Much More battled back to the inside straightening for the drive, holding Kickupyaheels N at bay by a half-length while pocket-sitter Awesome Hill tried to sneak into contention late but settled for third. Dabarndawgswatchin took fourth.

Co-owned by trainer Don Beatson with Kenneth Beatson and Cole England, So Much More won her sixth race from 13 starts this season and her 47th from 103 overall. She has banked $935,958 and paid $3.30 to win.
