Mikey Camden Seeks Red Shores Repeat
The far outside has been the story of May for Mikey Camden and he will look to overcome it again this Saturday (May 14) at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The capital oval has a 6:30 P.M. post time for the 14-dash program on the second card of the Spring meet.
Mikey Camden is saddled with Post 8 in the $3,300 Preferred Pace, carded as the 13th dash. Gilles Barrieau drives the son of Camluck for trainer Colin Johnson and owners Debbie Element and Raymond Huschka. A 24-time winner from 75 lifetime starts, Mikey Camden comes into the event with a two-race win streak on the line after he won by open lengths from Post 8 last week in the preferred pace during the opening program of the season. His main challenge Saturday is slated to come from Post 2 starter Boys Turn (David Dowling) and Post 6 entry Premier Joy A (Jason Hughes) who was a runner-up in his Island debut last week.
Peter MacPhee sees Mikey Camden overcoming Post 8 as his top choice in the Post Time Picks.
“Mikey Camden raced large last week tipping three high up the backstretch and storming home to get the gold,” MacPhee said. “He’s back in the same spot this week and with Barrieau above the wheels it could be a repeat performance.”
Completing the Preferred field are Burn Out Hanover (Brady Sweet), Rose Run Quest (Adam Merner), My Land (Brodie MacPhee), Dylan Sam (Ken Murphy) and Screen Test (Corey MacPherson).
Last year’s two-year-old pacing phenom Fern Hill General kicks off his three-year-old campaign in Race 11 of the night from Post 4. Brodie MacPhee drives the Earl Smith-trained son of Malicious for owners Peter Smith and Gerald Morrisey. Taking a record of 1:55.1 over Truro Raceway in Nova Scotia as a rookie, Fern Hill General was a six-time winner last season while amassing $38,771 in earnings. His main foes in Saturday’s $2,300 class are Soccer Hanover (MacPherson) and Gringo Star (Marc Campbell).
