The playing field was far from perfect on Tuesday at The Raceway at Western Fair District, but the end result was perfect for Dashing Earl in the Preferred Trot

The six-year-old son of Earl-Glamour Girl K enjoyed a ground-saving journey for most of the mile before making a bold move in the late stages en route to the going-away score in the $15,000 tilt.

Dashing Earl, who started from the rail, tucked into the three-hole while Long Ago shot to the lead and sped past the quarter pole in a :30-second clip over a track listed “good” with a four-second allowance. Mars came after the leader from first-over on the way to the half, with Striking Lindsey along for the ride from second-over.

The mid-way point flashed up in 1:02 for Long Ago, who was still in command at the three-quarter pole in 1:33.4. Striking Lindsey was camped at his flank, though, and making life tough on the leader. Victom AS was hustled up three wide at that point and Dashing Earl was into the mix and gearing up for Steward as the field prepared to turn for home. Dashing Earl scampered home in :31.3 to rally by the leaders en route to the 1-1/4 length score in 2:05.4. Striking Lindsey was second, with Victom AS third.

Paul Taylor trains the homebred for owner Bob Key of Leechburg, PA. It was the first win of the season for the 17-time winner, and the lion’s share of the purse boosted his overall earnings to $292,356.
