The Light Speed Strong At Rideau
Off the 3-2 favourite, The Light Speed strode to the front and led at every step to post a 1:52.4 victory in the $10,500 Preferred Handicap Pace on Sunday (May 1) at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Trainer-driver Guy Gagnon grabbed the front with the four-year-old Moon Beam gelding to a :27.1 first quarter while Major Hill floated off the car but raced parked past the stands first time. He then steadily advanced towards the pacesetter through a :57 half and into an accelerated clip to three-quarters in 1:25.1 before faltering into the final turn. The Light Speed turned for home just with Lovemyrockinbird threatening out of the pocket, but the favourite held on to the finish to win by half a length. Legion Seelster rode the pylons for third and Major Hill faded to fourth.
A homebred for Michel Nolette, The Light Speed won his second race from 11 starts this season and his 19th from 47 overall. He has earned $130,959 and paid $5 to win.
