'Cape Cod' Captures Hackett
Despite drawing the outermost post, Cape Cod Hanover captured the $50,000 final of the James K. Hackett Memorial for sophomore state bred pacing fillies at Miami Valley on Tuesday (April 26).
The daughter of red-hot sire Downbytheseaside lead stablemates Coastal and Twenty through the wire, giving leading trainer a sweep of the top three spots.
The winner paid $8.40, the $2 exacta returned $137 and the winning 50-cent trifecta was worth $559.95.
Driver Chris Page urged the winner out of the gate enough to drop in third during the initial :27.1 quarter mile. With even-money favourite Cold Hearted Gypsy slowing the pace to the :55.4 halfway station, Page moved to the outside and raced on even terms with the leader past three quarters in 1:23.4. A :28.1 closing kick was enough to hold off Coastal and Twenty in 1:52. When You Kiss Me and Cold Hearted Gypsy earned the minor rewards in the lucrative championship tilt.
The Hackett victory pushed Cape Cod Hanover’s record to eight wins in twelve starts, to go with three place finishes including the $200,000 Kentuckiana at Harrah’s Hoosier Park and the $300,000 Ohio Sires Stakes championship at MGM Northfield Park in 2021. The $20,000 yearling purchase from the Hanover Shoe Farms consignment to the Ohio Select Sale has now pushed her career bankroll to $305,467 in those dozen starts.
Burke Racing’s partners on Cape Cod Hanover are Weaver Bruscemi, Rich Lombardo Racing and Ras Racing.
The Wednesday (April 27) program at Miami Valley will feature the $50,000 Hackett Memorial final for Ohio sired sophomore pacing colts. Post time is 4:05 p.m. (EDT).
