Giesbrecht Takes Five At Century Downs
It was a productive Saturday at the office for driver Phil Giesbrecht who hauled home five wins during the 12-race card at Century Downs.
Giesbrecht captured the opener with True Crime in 1:58.3 before coming back to take Race 2 – the $10,500 Fillies & Mares Open – with Stash The Cookies in 1:54.1.
The 2-5 got away third and held that spot through fractions of :29 and :58 before following cover to the three-quarter pole in 1:26. Stash The Cookies then fired home in :27.3 to win by a half-length margin over stable mate If Only Id Known. Outlawstormywether was third.
Trainer Chris Lancaster shares ownership on the 13-time winner with Derek Gilbert of Brandon, MB. She’s banked just shy of $150,000 to date.
Giesbrecht then added wins with Triple Action (2:00.2) in Race 5, Samba Beat (1:55.2) in Race 11 and Mr Dillion (1:59.2) in Race 12.
Saturday’s card also included the co-featured $10,500 Open Pace, which went to the front-stepping Codename Cigar Box in a time of 1:54.2.
Trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt hustled the gelding to the lead from Post 6 and together they whacked out fractions of :27.4, :57 and 1:26.3 before using a :27.4 kicker to win by five lengths over Munchie Chris. Pipewrench Charlie took home the show dough.
It was the fourth straight win for the four-year-old son of Custard The Dragon-Art Amour, who is owned by Hoerdt and partners Fred Gilbert and Blair Corbeil. The 12-time winner has banked $195,843 to date.
