Perfetto Ekes Out Preferred Triumph
It was a pedal to the metal battle that Perfetto lived to tell about in Monday’s $36,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Trainer/driver Dagfin Henriksen hustled Perfetto to the lead from Post 5 and together they arrived at the quarter pole in :28. Pikachu Hanover blasted out of the three-hole in the backstretch, but Henriksen opted to drive on and those two battled to the half in :55.4.
The continued their tussle to the three-quarter pole in 1:25.1, and at that point Pikachu Hanover had had enough and was backing away. Perfetto grabbed some insurance lengths on the others in the stretch, and he needed those lengths late. Dream Nation stormed up on the far outside late, but couldn’t get to Perfetto who held on to win by a nose in 1:54.3. Dream Nation was next best, with Spartan General closing from far back to finish third.
Gerald Haggerty of Camden East, Ont. owns the seven-year-old son of Majestic Son-Perfect Prelude. The victory improved the two-time O’Brien Award winner’s boxscore to 2-1-0 from five trips to the track in 2022. The 25-time winner lifted his lifetime earnings to $695,416 with the win.
