Calabrese, Shoemaker Hanover Win AHDC Trot

Shoemaker Hanover

There's an old adage that states "good things come to those who wait" which could by applied to John Calabrese and Shoemaker Hanover after they sat back off the early fractions  and then rallied to win the $9,200 American Harness Drivers Club Trot on Saturday (Feb. 26) at Freehold Raceway.

Although sent off as the betting favourite, Calabrese angled his trotter to the pylons after the start and was content to allow Latoka (Tony Beltrami)  to show the way by the quarter in :29. Still in command, Latoka was solid on the lead  as he led his competition by the half in :58.4 but when they straightened up the backside  Calabrese moved Shoemaker Hanover off the pylons and went three deep as the field headed for the final turn. However,  Latoka was still in charge as the field headed for home but he tired in the deep stretch and faded as Tony Verruso rallied Masster Blue up to challenge Shoemaker Hanover. But that effort failed as Calabrese's trotter was too strong and went on to a length victory in 1:59.4 over Masster Blue. Latoka held on for the show dough.

Shoemaker Hanover,  a nine-year-old Cantab Hall stallion, is owned by Calabrese Farms LLC and Michelle Rickey. Sent off as the favourite in the race, he paid $4.20 for the win.
