'Rev' Readies For Red Shores Finale
The 2022 Winter Meet is set to come to a close on Monday evening (Jan. 31) with The Rev searching for the Preferred Pace winner’s circle at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park. The card was rescheduled due to the winter storm impacting P.E.I. on Saturday and Sunday.
The 12-dash Monday card gets underway at 6 p.m. (AST) as the last scheduled race program before the winter break. The 2022 summer racing season is scheduled to kick off on May 7 at the capital oval.
The Rev has post three in Monday’s $3,200 Preferred Pace in Race 11, the Red Shores Pace, and will look to capitalize on the absence of Sock It Away, who won in this class the last two weeks. The winner’s circle was exactly what The Rev found the last time he faced this class with no Sock It Away on the roster, as traine/driver Gilles Barrieau won the Preferred Pace in 1:56 with the richest Atlantic-bred pacer ever on December 31. A 50-time winner in his career, The Rev is owned by Jeffrey and Robert Skinner of Nova Scotia.
Mikey Camden is the morning line favourite in the field from post four with David Dowling in the seat from the hot Colin Johnson barn. The 10-year-old son of Camluck just went over the $100,000 mark in career earnings during his second-place finish to Sock It Away last week, with the majority of that money coming since the horse came back to Canada from Great Britain in late 2020.
Also in the field are Mantario (to be driven by Marc Campbell), Mc Pat (Adam Merner) and Ladylike (Jason Hughes).
Peter MacPhee places The Rev in the win position of the Post Time Picks: “We loved the way The Rev raced three back fronting it the entire way and scoring in 1:56. Lines up in a similar spot and he seems to do his best work with Barrieau so they could reach up and grab the gold.”
Well Lets See comes to P.E.I. in Race 9, joining the Trevor Hicken barn from post four in the $1,850 event. Jason Hughes will drive the nine-year-old son of Well Said for owner Trish Hardy of Windsor, N.S., as the veteran looks to build on his 31 victories.
The Race 12 finale will close the season as Shifting Views makes his Island debut with Zach Conway in the race bike for owner/trainer Paul Conway of Bonshaw from post four in the $2,400 dash. The Big Jim five-year-old was racing the claiming ranks in Ontario where he was a 1:57.4 winner at Flamboro Downs in 2021.
Red Shores will be open to customers under the current COVID guidelines. Please note the Top of the Park is closed on Monday.
