Gary F. Smith Passes

Gary F. "Shack" Smith passed away at home last Saturday (Jan. 25) at the age of 64.

Gary was a proud Islander, "over home" as he would say, and that is where his love of harness racing started. Over the years, he was involved in many aspects of the sport, and in recent years he was a Paddock Judge, for which he committed many hours to serving at several racetracks.

Gary is survived by his son, Russell Hambly of Charlottetown, P.E.I, and his special friend Beckey Daniel.

He is predeceased by his mother Lexie Mae (Davidson) Smith of Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Gary will be missed by so many in the harness racing community as well as all who were fortunate to call him a friend.

His P.E.I. roots were near and dear to his heart. When it is safe to travel, he will be taken home and laid to rest.

Bishop's Funeral Home and Crematorium, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton, NB, have been entrusted with Gary's arrangements. Online condolences and sharing of memories may be made at bishopsfuneralhome.com.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Donations in Gary’s memory may be made to Morning Star Acres with this link or the Fredericton Horseman’s Association at 366 Aberdeen Street, Suite 3M, Fredericton, NB, E3B 0C9.

My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Gary. He was always there to help everyone out. He was an asset to me for any Standardbred Canada business that I needed and for that I will always be forever grateful. If I ever needed anything, he was the guy to call. He will be missed by many, including me. RIP and thanks for everything!

Gary and I didn't always see eye to eye, but I must say he truly was a devoted horseman, everything he did, he did with passion. he will be missed by the industry, and by me. Rest in peace, my friend.
