Campbell Taking Aim At CDP Driving Record
Red Shores' Charlottetown Driving Park will host a pair of harness racing programs Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The Prince Edward Island Horse Owners Association will present Horseperson’s Day on Sunday, which will include the annual driver’s championship
.
The big story is Marc Campbell, who will be going after the driving title for most wins in a single season at Charlottetown, which was set in 1987 by the late Paul MacDonald. MacDonald recorded 118 wins that year, which also included a Gold Cup victory aboard Gimble. Twenty-four years later, Campbell, at the rate he’s going, should break the record before the end of the season. The 27-year-old has 109 Charlottetown victories and is down to drive 20 horses this weekend. The magic number is 10.
The popular driver’s championship is set for Sunday afternoon. The eight drivers, who are current members of the PEISHOA, will compete for the E.F. Acorn Memorial trophy. Marc Campbell, Kenny Arsenault, Mark Bradley and Corey MacPherson represent the 'most wins' category, while Shane Bernard and Ron Matheson join the competition from the 'over 75 starts UDR driver average' division with Danny MacDonald and Joey Pineau competing from the 'over 40 under 75 UDR average' category.
