At the age of just 22, Scott Zeron has blasted onto the harness racing scene as one of the world’s top drivers and clearly one of the best that Canada has ever

produced.

At the invitation of local trainer Rick Lancaster, the Ontario-based Zeron will be appearing at Fraser Downs this Friday afternoon as part of BC Breeders’ Classic Day, a 1:45 p.m. Remembrance Day start. A first-class young man, Zeron will donate his winnings to the Royal Canadian Legion.

The son of celebrated trainer/driver Rick Zeron, Scott is currently this year’s leading driver in Canada having registered 482 wins and $6.9 million in earnings as of November 5.

“Those numbers come after an amazing 2,608 starts this year alone,” said Fraser Downs Director of Racing Jackson Wittup. “A driver back east on the busy Ontario circuit can work two tracks on the same date.”

There will be $230,000 in purse money on the line Friday at Fraser Downs for four BC Breeders’ Classic Day stakes, including $75,000 each for the Robert Murphy Stakes for three-year-old colts and geldings, as well the Mary Murphy Stakes for three-year-old fillies. Each of the two-year-old stakes races on the undercard have $40,000 purses with total purse money for the entire card totaling $275,600.

Lancaster will have Zeron driving Stepuptotheplate in the Robert Murphy against Dan Ingram’s Gramrun Jake, winner of four in a row that has included both elimination legs. Another hot contender will be Boom Shazam out of the Justin Currie barn.

Just Fiction, the two-year-old champion last year out of the JJJ Stables/Al Anderson barn, has won 14 of 17 career starts and should be the morning line favourite for the Mary Murphy. Imherefortheparty, out of the Erik Neyhart barn, won both eliminations and is expected to give Just Fiction some serious competition.

With the two-year-olds, trainer Rick White has a strong three-horse entry in the colts and geldings stakes: Gotta Have Nukes, Hector Protector and Thieving Magpie. Bill Boden’s undefeated Cheyee J is the slight favourite for the two-year-old fillies' stakes, but Mach Maiden Heaven, Te Anau and Slow And Easy will be provide some anxious moments.

One of the best moment of the year for me was seeing Scott Zeron win the Battle of Waterloo at Grand River in August. It started with getting up close and personal with the fans before the racing started and I remember that smile that was brighter then the sun that day after that race. One of the amazing young drivers all of Ontario gets a chance to see. A chip of the old man's block for sure, saying that Scott has taken that experience and is shaping his career his own way. Good luck in BC Scott, will definitely be rooting for you.

Our entire family (especially my 10-year-old son) are big Scott Zeron fans. Nicely done, Scotty! Now I'm waiting to see more drivers follow this very wise example. C'mon guys; step up to the plate!

Class act, Scotty! What a fitting tribute to our war veterans, you are an asset to our sport.

So proud of you, Scott. You are the dose of good medicine that Standardbred racing needs. Best of luck always.

The class comes out again...Good Luck and make lots for the Legion
