Front End Holds Up In Turner Memorial

The front end was the place to be on Sunday afternoon at Truro Raceway in the Donnie & George Turner Memorial Pace for three-year-olds as all three division winners took the same wire-to-wire route and landed themselves in the winner's circle

.

Wayne Bell trainee Woodmere Ultimate was a wire-to-wire winner in the first of three $10,388 divisions with Mike Stevenson reining home the Western Success-Blue Violet gelding in 2:02.2 over the 'good' track rated three seconds off. Pocket-sitter Tobins Fortune finished one and a quarter lengths behind with a broken headpole while filly Diamond Coast (Kenny Arsenault) rallied home off cover to show.

The win was Woodmere Ultimate's third in a row following victories in the Atlantic Breeders Crown Consolation and a Gold division of the Joe O'Brien Memorial. Unraced as a freshman, the gelding has recorded five wins and five seconds in 13 starts while banking $20,766 for owners Boyd Macdonald Prodce Ltd. and Daniel Ross of P.E.I., and New Brunswick's Charles Seymour.

Also fresh off an O'Brien Gold win, Maritimer, driven by Clare MacDonald, front-stepped his way to a two length triumph in 2:06. J G S Sandy (Todd Trites) and The Streak (Kenny Arsenault) followed along in second and third.

George Rennison trains the Full Scholarship-Country Chill colt for Barbara Pearl of Nova Scotia. After winning his only start as a freshman, Maritimer has put together a record reading 8-2-3 in 14 starts this year to push his overall bankroll to $37,155.

Putnams Art pulled off the only upset in the final division as he held off favourites Camcun (Kenny Arsenault) and filly Honey Do Jigtime (Clare MacDonald) to win in front end fashion in 2:04.3.

Trainer Bernard McCallum drove the Southwind Balsam-Raisin Ruckus gelding, also unraced as a two-year-old, to his ninth win in 25 starts for owner Wesley Patriquin of Nova Scotia. The lion's share of the purse lifted his lifetime earnings to $54,967.
