Champions Face Off At Sudbury
Thomson Seelster and Seawind Gambler were the champions of Saturday night's card at Sudbury Downs taking the two $15,000 Champion Series divisions.
In the first division of the second leg, Thomson Seelster (Gerry Belanger) managed to get up for the win in 1:56.4 for trainer Stacey Horner.
As the fan favourite Western Wiggles (Paul MacLean) set the pace with panels of :27.4, :57.1 and 1:26.4, Thomson Seelster was sitting fourth, riding the cover of Full Of Speed (Michael MacNeill), with Whitesand Noble (Wayne MacLean) on the inside in third.
In the stretch, the eight-year-old gelding out of Rustler Hanover sprinted home, capturing the win by a head. Whitesand Noble was second and Force Of Luck finished third.
Thomson Seelster has won 53 times in his career giving him a total of $490,824 in purse earnings. He is owned by Belanger Racing Stables of Barrie, Ont.
In the second and fastest split, Seawind Gambler and trainer/driver Allan Hohner challenged the pacesetter Control Freak (Gerry Belanger) right from the get-go. The five-year-old son of Astreos sat on the outside in second through opening panels of :27.1 and :56.3 before taking over the lead just before the third quarter pole in 1:26.
The bay gelding pulled away by four lengths for the win in 1:55.3. Jakes Buddy (Dan Megens) was the runner-up with No Competition (Mario Rivest) rounding out the top three.
The seven-time winner who has earned $122,754 is owned by David Haney of Waterloo and Lawrence Smith of Elmira, Ont.
In other action, Donald Rankin took his third consecutive Preferred Trot for $9,000 with owner Paul MacLean in the bike for trainer France MacLean.
The eight-year-old gelding out of Conway Hall headed straight to the front from Post 5 and never looked back. He posted fractions of :29.1, :59 and 1:29.4 with a two-length lead on the field. The post time favourite sprinted home for the win in 1:59.3 by four lengths.
Jazzy Justin (Pat Barr) rode the pocket for second and Terra Cotta Caddy (Allan Hohner) finished third.
Tonight, Donald Rankin made his tenth trip of the year to the winner's circle. His 21st lifetime score increased his bankroll to $211,585.
