Truro Accident Update
Trot Insider has received new information regarding the six-horse pile-up which sent two drivers to hospital Sunday, October 2 at Truro Raceway
.
The incident occurred in Race 9 on the track's 14-dash card. Six of the eight horses in the race were involved in the accident. The race was declared a no-contest.
Capital Deal and driver Clayton Stevens swooped to the lead in the vicinity of the quarter pole. Capital Deal then went offstride just after making the lead. The horse in the two hole, Windemere Sheldon (driven by Cyril MacDonald), then broke as well.
Capital Deal and Windemere Sheldon were both on the run in the one and two path, which eventually led to the chain-reaction pile-up which saw horses and drivers tangle with each other before hitting the track.
Clayton Stevens and fellow driver Gilles Barrieau (who was driving Bengal Lancer) were taken to local hospital.
Barrieau has since told Trot Insider that he will likely be out of action for two to three months after having broken his left wrist in two places. He also suffered a total of five breaks to his pinky and ring fingers.
"I feel all right, I just have a lot of pain in my body," Barrieau told Trot Insider. "I'm just lucky. With horses down in front of you and having horses right behind you all I can say is that I am lucky."
Another that is surely lucky is Stevens, who, according to the Truro Raceway race office, tore one of his pectoral muscles. Stevens escaped even more serious injury, seeing as though a horse landed on his chest in the incident.
At the time of publishing, the only known horse-related injury was to the Ernest Laffin-driven Remember Wild Roses. The Truro Race office has informed Trot Insider that the three-year-old Town Prophet filly suffered a gash to her chest which required stitches.
