Long Ago Sweeps Champions Series
Long Ago completed the sweep of the Champions Trot Series with another front-end effort in the $37,200 final on Wednesday night at Sudbury Downs
. The series is for non-winners of $75,000 as of Wednesday, August 24.
Driver Bruce Richardson sent the Post 4 starter to the top and cruised past panels of :28.3, :57 and 1:26.4 en route to his fourth straight victory in 1:58.1. Kashas Kid (Paul MacLean) and Victors Valiant (Mike MacNeill), also previous winners in the series, finished second and third respectively.
The fan favourite paid $4.10 to win.
Trainer John Holding of Campbellville, Ont. shares ownership of the Duke Of York-Hope Floats six-year-old with Bryan Montgomery of Fergus, Ont.
The bay gelding matched Zorgwijk Fortunate's track record for older male trotters with his 1:57.4 winning performance in the opening leg of the series and then followed up that performance with a 1:59.3 triumph in the second leg and a 2:01.2 victory over a sloppy track in last week's leg. Long Ago now has 10 wins in 30 starts on his 2011 record with over $100,000 earned.
