San Pail Scores; Lexington Next

The winning streak is now four in a row and counting for Canada’s defending Older Trotting Horse of the Year, San Pail, who toyed with the six foes he squared off with in Tuesday evening’s $50,000 Open Handicap Trot at Mohawk Racetrack

.

With Randy Waples at the lines, San Pail slid into the five-hole as the field followed Define The World to the quarter-pole in :26.4. He was pressed to that interval by the parked out Il Villaggio, who cleared to the lead in the backstretch and sped to field to the half-mile marker in a :55-second clip. San Pail commenced a first-over rally on the way to the half, and shortly past the mid-way point the ball was in his court. He zipped around the final turn and had the field at his mercy at the three-quarter pole in 1:23.3 before using a :28-second final frame to seal the deal by 3-1/4 lengths over Andover America in 1:51.3. Third prize went to Tall Cotton.

“I was real happy with him tonight,” trainer/co-owner Rod Hughes told Trot Insider. “1:51.3 is a big mile tonight because it’s a bit cool, but they’ve got the track real good and they went pretty good up front. Randy said he was he real strong finishing, and I’m happy with that.”

Another road trip is in the works for Team San Pail, as the Ontario-bred sensation will be heading stateside for an engagement next month.

“We’re heading to Lexington for the Allerage on October 1, and then we’ll come right back home and head to the Breeders Crown,” added Hughes. “This will be the first time they’ll be racing the Allerage at night. It would have been nice to race in the daytime and see where they could have gone from a speed perspective.”

Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry bred and co-owns the seven-year-old son of San Pellegrino-Village Beauty, who won for the 46th time in his career, with trainer Hughes of Dunsford, ON. The victory improved the gelding’s 2011 record to 11-2-0 in 13 starts, and the winning payday pushed his lifetime earnings to $2,579,215.
