'Sun' Shines; 'Zip' Matches Record
A group of seven lined up behind the starting gate in Thursday’s feature race at Red Shores Charlottetown, and Riccaras Sun proved to be too much for the competition to handle in the $1,600 tilt

Driver Marc Campbell rolled Riccaras Sun to the lead, and the Trevor Hicken trainee sliced out fractions of :27.2, :57.3 and 1:28.3 before using a :28.3 kicker to win by a pair of lengths in 1:57.1. Blue Star Outlaw sat a pocket trip throughout the mile and finished second, while Mchales Gravy grabbed the show dough.
Charming Guy, in rein to driver Brian Andrew, made a break past the half and fell in the featured affair. Officials from Red Shores Charlottetown confirmed that both horse and driver came away with no serious injuries.
Kenneth MacInnis of Charlottetown, PEI owns Riccaras Sun, who won for the third time this season and for the 24th time in his career. The six-year-old son of Allamerican Native has banked more than $60,000 to date.
Driver Campbell and trainer Hicken each finished the night with three wins apiece.
Earlier on the card, Zip The Lip captured the $1,500 Open Trot by a neck in a time of 2:00.3. The three-year-old Ken Warkentin gelding survived a first-over journey en route to the narrow score over Saulsbrook Balance. Third prize went to Dunmore Alpha.
The clocking allowed Zip The Lip to match his own track record for three-year-old trotting geldings. Mel Willis of Cambridge, ON holds the papers on the youngster who is now 5-for-9 this season.
