Trotting Fillies Clash In NYSS

Statebreds sloshed their way back down the Thruway Tuesday night, with Yonkers Raceway hosting the soggy $230,508 New York Sire Stakes Bedford Trot for three-year-old fillies

.

A quartet of $57,627 consecutive divisions started in a monsoon (the evening’s first race was delayed about 20 minutes due to power issues), with defending sire stakes champ Some Girls (Brian Sears) prevailing from the pocket in the opening event.

Leaving from post position three, the 2-5 choice chased Imageofasweetday (John Stark, Jr.) through intervals of :30.1, 1:01 and 1:31.2. She then ducked inside, whipping Temper Of Will (George Brennan) by a length-and-a-half in 2:01 Imageofasweetday held third.

For Some Girls, a daughter of Conway Hall co-owned by (trainer) Gates Brunet, Jean Brunet, Michael Rosenthal and Ted Gewertz, she returned $2.90 for her sixth win in 13 seasonal starts.

The second NYSS event saw Massive Drama (Jeff Gregory) rush past 7-5 fave Go Go Dancer (Cat Manzi) down the backside, then hold both that one and a closing Enchanted (Sears) at bay in 2:01.

Go Go Dancer had two-moved to the lead through fractions of :29.4 and 1:00.3, but the eventual winner - leaving from post six - took over before the 1:30.1 three-quarters. Massive Drama's final margin was a neck her first win in nine seasonal starts.

Mark Harder trained the Credit Winner miss for co-owners Deena Frost, Peter Venturini and Stable 45. Massive Drama returned $9.70 (third choice).

Tuesday night's third sire stakes event was won by odds-on, pole-sitting Miss Sue V (Sears, $3.20), who took no prisoners (:29, 1:00, 1:29.4, 2:00.1) en route to a nine-length romp. All Munky Business (Dan Dube) grabbed second at 37-1 over Epona Blue Chip (Schnittker).

Miss Sue V, a Credit Winner lass co-owned (as Kelley Racing) by trainer Paul Kelley and breeder (as Valley High Stable) William Weaver III, is now 5-for-9 this season and 9-for-18 in her career.

The evening's final Empire event offered by far the evening's surprise outcome, as 1-20 Jezzy (Schnittker) went down.

Away fourth from post two, she could not clear 55-1 Tap Tap Dance (Dan Daley). The latter had made the lead after a :28.3 opening quarter, then found a :58 half and 1:28.1 three-quarters.

Jezzy began heading the other way off the final turn, and a second-up (after starting from the pylons) Nowerland Firebird (Brennan) closed to win going away in a flat two minutes. Cameo Credit (Jim Raymer), the 81-1 rank outsider, snatched second, beaten 2-1/4 lengths, with Em El Cash (Sears) third. Jezzy faded to sixth, five lengths behind the winner in her first non-payday in 23 career races.

For Nowerland Firebird, a daughter of Cash Hall co-owned by (trainer) Gilberto Garcia-Herrera and Michi Abday, she returned $22.20 as the 10-1 second choice.

New York Sire Stakes continue Friday night with the $250,012 Frank Becerra Pace for two-year-old fillies.
