How Good Is Daylon Magician?
Five years ago, the top trotting colt in the Ontario Sires Stakes faced the best in North America when those trotters shipped to Canada - and he defeated them. Can David Lemon’s homebred world champion Daylon Magician repeat what Majestic Son did in 2006?
On today's Trot Radio, Lemon discusses how his career began four decades ago, and the making of his superstar trotter Daylon Magician. The Kadabra-Daylon Marvel colt won three of eight races including the Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final as a freshman while banking $225,300, and has flourished as a sophomore. This year, he has won seven of nine races while earning $305,477 and cementing his name in the record books numerous times. Among his conquests include two OSS Gold Finals, the Goodtimes Trot Consolation and the Canadian Breeders Championship at Mohawk, lowering Majestic Son’s stakes record by two-fifths of a second with his 1:52.3 clocking. In he most recent Gold Final win at Flamboro Downs on August 14, he clocked a 1:54.2 track, Canadian and world record equalling mile.
“This year now he is phenomenal. He just wants to be first,” said Lemon of his colt’s winning attitude. “He’s just been phenomenal. Every time he races he goes out and sets a track record or a sires stakes record and now he equalled the world record."
Daylon Magician will look to follow in Majestic Son’s hoofprints and tackle the best of the best in the $1 million Canadian Trotting Classic on Saturday, September 17 at Mohawk Racetrack (eliminations Saturday, September 10).
"The Trotting Classic is his next start, we kept him eligible to that. That’s in two weeks,” continued Lemon. “We’ve got a couple of sires stakes after the Trotting Classic and then the final of the sires stakes.”
Lemon noted that he is considering supplementing his stable star to the Breeders Crown later in the year as well.
“We’ve got that in the back of our mind. If things are still chugging ahead we’re thinking about that,” he said.
Lemon also discussed Jeff Gural’s movement to keep harness racing’s stars on the track after their sophomore campaign and noted that he plans to race Daylon Magician at four. To hear the entire interview with Trot Radio host Norm Borg, click on the play button below.
