Deep Finesse Scores In Nova Scotia
Deep Finesse recorded his eighth straight victory as the Western Paradise colt won a $13,900 division of the Nova Scotia Stakes series for two-year-old pacing colts at Inverness Raceway on Sunday afternoon.
Phil Pinkney tipped three-wide with his colt at the 1:00.3 half to clear to the front before the third station in 1:30 and held off P H Cyril (Terry Gallant) by one and one-half lengths for the 2:00.3 victory. Evil Mind (Danny Romo) and Forever Finesse dead-heated for third with the final cheque going to Maverick Benka (Redmond Doucet).
Deep Finesse, bred by Donald Porter of Belmont, N.S., went over the $35,000 mark in seasonal earnings for the veteran Pinkney, who purchased the colt privately earlier this year.
The top four finishers were sired by Western Paradise.
Inverness Raceway also hosted the $7,500 Inverness Invitation on its 10-dash card with track record holder Cam Spade showing he was still the master of his domain.
The eight-year-old Carlsbad Cam gelding charged home with a 28.3 final quarter for driver Redmond Doucet to win over Outlawpositivchharg (Terry Gallant) in 1:56.4. The margin of victory was one and one-half lengths.
Pownal Bay Matt, the Gold Cup and Saucer winner, was third for Earl Smith, beaten by three lengths with minor shares going to St Pete Star (Romo) and Aahm Cruisin (Ryan Campbell). J Gs Hangman was the other starter.
The victory was the 12th in 30 starts this year for Cam Spade and owner Walter Walker of Inverness. The pacer set a track pacing record of 1:55.3 at the Cape Breton track earlier this year after arriving from Flamboro Downs, where he had paced to a 1:55.2 victory.
