Rookie Pacing Fillies Flaunt It In ATSS

Two-year-old pacing fillies strutted their stuff at Red Shores Charlottetown on Thursday afternoon as the half-mile oval hosted seven divisions of the Atlantic Sires Stakes

The first of the three $9,760 “A” divisions went to Pictonian Amanda and driver Mike Stevenson in 1:58.3. The daughter of Western Paradise-Southview Sasha chopped out panels of :29.4, 1:00 and 1:29.2 before using a :29.1 final frame to seal the deal. She held on to win by three-quarters of a length over Malabrigo, with Abovethenorm taking home third prize.

Wayne Bell trains the youngster for Daniel Ross and Bill Bell of Belfast, PEI. The victory improved her record to 2-2-2 in six starts and the lion’s share of the purse lifted her earnings to $13,864.

Stevenson also mapped out a winning trip for J J Maywest in the second division. The daughter of Western Paradise-Jenn Of Art led the field through fractions of :29.1, 1:00 and 1:29.4 before using a :28.3 closing panel to draw away to the seven-length tally in 1:58.2. Cash An Clay was next best, and Sweetwater Teaha rounded out the top three.

Trainer Blaine McKenna co-owns the rookie, who was sent off as the 4-5 choice, with Harold Culleton of Ellerslie and Gary Aitken of Summerside, PEI. It was the fourth victory in six tries for the career winner of $14,419.

Rebel Enforcer notched the first stakes victory of her career in the third division despite some anxious moments in the early stages of the mile. A breaking foe bothered her in the first turn, and after making a brief break of her own she regained her composure and sprinted to the lead. She led the field through middle panels of :59.3 and 1:30.3 before tacking on a :31.2 final frame to seal the deal by three lengths in a career-best clocking of 2:02. Southfield Sophie was the second one to cross the finish line, with R Es Nancy checking in third.

Kevin MacLean of Vernon Bridge, PEI owns and trains the daughter of Force Of Life-Karen Rebel. The victory improved her record to 2-2-0 in four tries and her share of the purse boosted her cash stash to $5,327.

The $2,500 “B” divisions went to Miss Mercedes (2:02.3), Waterside Wishes (2:04.1), T Bear Samantha (2:03.1) and R Es Sobrina (2:02.3).
